Xperia Z2 CyanogenMod 11 Nightlies commence

$

0

cyanogenmodThe Sony Xperia Z2 has official CyanogenMod 11 (Android 4.4.3) support starting from today. The first nighty build for the handset, codenamed Sirius, is now up on the CyanogenMod website.

You will need to have an unlocked bootloader if you want to give the custom ROM a try, although as it’s a nightly build don’t expect it run as stable as your current daily driver. Current issues include bugs with the camera (interface freezes while touch to focus) and touchscreen responsiveness. Hopefully, over time these issues will be ironed out.

Thanks Fareed!

Z2 CM11 ThumbAndreas Makris (aka the very well-known Xperia developer Bin4ry and long-standing member of the FreeXperia team) has released a couple of images of an unofficial CyanogenMod 11 build running on the Xperia Z2 Tablet. Makris has used the latest version of CM11 as the tablet is running Android 4.4.3 KitKat. There is no ETA on when we might see the unofficial CM11 build appear, but hopefully it is coming soon.

Xperia Z1s for T-Mobile finally gets Root

$

Xperia Z1s RootedSony Xperia Z1s (C6916) owners have been patiently waiting for the handset to be rooted since it launched earlier this year. Normally achieving root is a relatively straight forward process if you can unlock the bootloader. The problem for Xperia Z1s owners is that this is a T-Mobile US carrier device and thus the bootloader cannot be unlocked.

Well, thanks to a root exploit discovered for the Sony Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z2 Tablet (note: full root has yet to be achieved for these models), XDA devs jcase and beaups have managed to fully root the Xperia Z1s.

This means that Xperia Z1s owners can finally use root apps and can also dabble in custom ROMs. However, it is worth noting that this root solution is specific to the current Xperia Z1s kernel, so users may not be able to use Android KitKat until a compatible kernel is provided. Full root instructions for the Xperia Z1s can be found here.

Hopefully the ability to achieve full root on the Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z2 Tablet with locked bootloaders will also be possible very shortly. We will keep you posted with any further developments.

Root your Xperia Z2 with locked bootloader [Guide]

2014-06-15 19.25.40Good news Sony Xperia Z2 owners, developers have managed to fully root the handset even if you have a locked bootloader. Credit goes to various devs over at XDA including DooMLoRD, norti and xsacha. Local root was achieved a few days ago, allowing users to back up their TA partition to retain DRM keys when unlocking the bootloader. However, the Xperia Z2 now has full root.

The exploit used to root the Xperia Z2 was patched in the latest Xperia Z2 firmware build (17.1.1.A.0.402), so it will only work with older firmware with build numbers 17.1.A.2.55 and 17.1.A.2.69. Support for rooting the Xperia Z2 Tablet is also expected very soon.

We have written a guide below detailing the rooting process. It will work on handsets with both locked and unlocked bootloaders. Once you apply the script, your Xperia Z2 will be rooted, a backup of your TA partition will be created and Busybox and SuperSU will be installed too. The TA partition backup is crucial to those who want to unlock their bootloader and retain their DRM keys.

Tutorial to Root an Xperia Z2 with locked bootloader

Preparation
- You must be running 17.1.A.2.55 or 17.1.A.2.69 firmware.
- All necessary drivers need to be installed on your PC (including ADB drivers).

1) Download the Xperia Z2 Rooting Toolkit
Download the ‘Xperia Z2 Rooting Toolkit’ from here. Extract the ZIP file using Winzip/Winrar to a folder on your PC.

2) Switch on USB debugging and Unknown sources on your handset
Switch on the debugging option on your Xperia. Go to Settings > Developer options > Tick ‘USB debugging’

Also tick ‘Unknown sources’ under Settings > Security.

3) Connect phone to PC
Switch your phone on and connect it to your PC/laptop via USB.

4) Run the Toolkit
Now double click the ‘runme.bat’ file from the extracted files from step 1.

You will see the following screen appear talking about “Installing exploit app“. You don’t need to do anything at this stage, just let the program run.

Xperia Z2 Root Guide_1

You will then see that the script is copying a BIG file, once again let the script do its work.

Xperia Z2 Root Guide_2

5) Crash the Service Menu app
Once you see the following screen, you need to crash the Service Menu on your Xperia Z2. When you access your phone, you should notice that the script has opened your Service Menu. Click on Service Info > Configuration and you will notice that the screen will blink and then you will be thrown back into the Service Menu. Click any key on your PC/laptop to continue.

Xperia Z2 Root Guide_3

If successful, you will then see the following screen. Once again, the process is the same as above. Crash the Service Menu and then press any key on your PC to continue.

Xperia Z2 Root Guide_4

If successful, you will very briefly see the following screen referring to “Removing exploit app” which will then disappear.

Xperia Z2 Root Guide_5

6) Disconnect and reboot your Xperia Z2
Disconnect the USB cable from your Xperia Z2 and reboot the handset once the script window disappears.

7) Your Xperia Z2 handset is now rooted
Congratulations your phone is now rooted.

Towelroot exploit helps root a number of Sony Xperia models

towelrootNotorious hacker Geohot (George Hotz) has turned his attention to rooting Android handsets and appears to have come up trumps with his latest exploit. For those that don’t know, Geohot managed to successfully jailbreak the PlayStation 3, which led to him being sued by Sony.

He has created Towelroot, which is an apk file that theoretically should be able to root pretty much any Android device using a kernel built before 3 June 2014 (Android 4.4.2 KitKat and lower).

A number of Sony Xperia users are reporting success in rooting their devices using towelroot including Xperia Z and ZL owners running the latest KitKat update and Xperia SP owners running Android 4.3. Other success stories have been reported by Xperia M, Xperia Z1 Compact and Xperia M2 owners.

To try it yourself, all you need to do is head over to the Towelroot website, click on the lambda and download the apk. Then simply run towelroot i.e. tap “make it ra1n,” to see if it has worked. Some users have problems with SU binaries not updating, if that happens to be the case, use the latest version from here. There is also a very large XDA thread discussing towelroot here.

tak500Want to give the new Google Android ‘L’ boot animation a try? Well you don’t have to wait for Android’s newest software to arrive this fall, as the boot animation has been extracted so that you can download it right now onto your Sony Xperia device.

This will work on rooted devices, but all you need to do is download this file. Then move it to system/media and set the correct permissions (RW-, R–, R–) and reboot your handset once completed. Enjoy!

IMG_2082Sony continues its drive to be one of the most open Android manufacturers out there. It has just announced that it will start to make Sony kernel sources for its flagship devices available on the SonyXperiaDev GitHub.

This is great news for the developers out there, making it easier for devs when working with custom ROMs and kernels. The use of GitHub will make it easier to integrate, track and review any changes.

To get going, head over to SonyXperiaDev GitHub, select your firmware build and then you will see baseline commits from the chipset manufacturer kernel as well as changes that Sony has added on top.

Android L Xperia Theme_2XDA dev JanM RS has released an Xperia Theme based on the design of the next major Android iteration, dubbed “Android L”. The design elements include the Android L style buttons, colours and wallpaper. Quite a nice theme worth trying.

The great thing about the theme is that it works for non-rooted handsets as long as you are running Android 4.4.2 KitKat on your Sony Xperia device. If you want to give it a try, you can download the apk here and install as you would any normal Xperia Theme.

Update: Also see Ben Ling’s port of a similar Xperia Theme on XDA. This will work with devices on Android 4.3 and above, but requires root.

Android L Keyboard_1_resultOnce the system dump of the latest Android L developer preview was in the hands of devs, it was only a matter of time before all parts of the OS were stripped bare. If you’re eager to try the new Android L Keyboard, then developer @shen_ye has managed to port the keyboard.

He has pushed the Android L Keyboard onto the Play Store and it runs on all Android devices running Android 4.0 and above – no root is needed. This is the stock keyboard app with no modifications and no bloat. It’s great to try to see what we have in store once the Android L release goes live at the end of the year.

Xperia Z2 disassemblyWe have already posted an Xperia Z2 disassembly guide earlier in the year, but if you do want to embark on dismantling your beloved Xperia Z2 then sometimes it’s easier to follow a video demo. This is where the following Xperia Z2 disassembly video comes into play.

It has been produced by smartphone spare-parts specialist, Witrigs. The 17-minute video does a great job of guiding you through the steps needed to remove the back cover to get access to the motherboard, cameras, earpiece, vibrator, loudspeaker and more. Very handy if your Xperia Z2 is in need of repair.

Check out these elegant analogue watch faces for your SmartWatch 2

Cartier-Inspired Watchface_resultSony’s big update for the SmartWatch 2 back in April introduced custom watch faces, giving users the ability to select from a range of clock faces and widgets. It was an excellent update for the SmartWatch 2 and it got even better in May, when Sony released the API allowing developers to create their own clocks and widgets.

Whilst many SmartWatch 2 owners like the use of widgets to display notifications, weather, alarm details etc, others may want a more simple and elegant approach. If that is you, then check out the analogue watch faces below from third-party developer Julian J Wong. There is a wide collection of free watch faces and premium ones too that mimic some of the well known watch brands out there. All Google Play Store links are included below.

Sony’s Unlock Bootloader service gets a revamp

$

0

unlock_new_660x384If you own a Sony Xperia device and have unlocked the bootloader of your handset, then you should be familiar with Sony’s boot loader unlock website. We have always found the website easy to use with clear instructions, especially since it can be a complicated process.

The good news is that Sony has relaunched the Unlock Bootloader website, making it easier to get that bootloader cracked. Sony has focused the information needed for your particular handset, so you don’t get unnecessary instructions for other devices. Sony has also included a FAQ to help those who have not completed the process before.

Unlocking the bootloader is now condensed down into the three main steps. 1) Select your device and enter an email address. 2) Submit your IMEI number and 3) Get your unlock code and perform the actual unlocking of the device. It’s worth pointing out that unlocking your bootloader voids the warranty, so tread with caution. Head over to the Unlock Bootloader website to check it out yourself.

Here’s how to replace the Xperia Z2 screen [Video]

$

Xperia Z2 replace screenIt always fascinates us how manufacturers can cram so much technology into something the size of a phone. Smartphones have gradually replaced many standalone gadgets such as MP3 players, digital cameras, portable gaming machines, GPS devices and more. Therefore, it can be quite painful if your phone gets damaged, especially as repair can be costly.

Witrigs, a specialist in spare smartphone parts, has released a video showing how you can replace the screen of the Sony Xperia Z2. It’s a fascinating watch, even if you don’t have the handset, just to see the process of stripping the phone down to its display and then seeing how it is put back together. If you do unfortunately need to replace the screen, all of the necessary parts from Witrigs can be found here.

Root available for Xperia Z2 firmware 17.1.2.A.0.314

xperia-z2-heroA new firmware update recently started to roll for the Xperia Z2 (D6503) in the form of build number 17.1.2.A.0.314. Whilst the Android build remains at version 4.4.2 KitKat, Sony did work through a number of changes including improved voice call quality, touch performance and charging when the battery is low.

One of the issues for some, was that none of the recent root methods worked on this latest firmware. However, thanks to Japanese developer ‏@cubeundcube this is no longer an issue. An update to his rootkitXperia tool kit manages to root the Xperia Z2 without any issues, even for those with locked bootloaders.

If you want to download rootkitXperia head over to ‏@cubeundcube’s download link (mirror). Find further information in the XDA links below.

Watch faces with animated gears land on the SmartWatch 2

Thumb_resultWe have already seen a number of analogue watch faces for the SmartWatch 2 from third-party developer Julian J Wong. The watch faces come courtesy of Sony opening up its API to developers to create their own clocks and widgets. This means that these watch faces can be installed a native clock and will work in active and low power mode to save battery.

JJW’s newest SmartWatch 2 creations are watch faces with animated gears. The watch face only displays animated gears whilst the screen is powered on and not when it is in standby mode, however it’s a nice idea nonetheless. Three premium watch faces have been released on the Google Play Store, with all links included below.

Xperia Z1 mod brings stereo speaker support (kind of)

xperia-z1-speakerOne of the big upgrades that the Xperia Z2 has over the Xperia Z1 is stereo speakers. However, if there are any Xperia Z1 owners who want a taste of stereo sound then you may want to check out a new mod. It uses the earpiece speaker as the second speaker to create stereo sound.

Obviously the earpiece speaker is not designed to output as much sound as the main speaker, so follow the linked instructions carefully to make sure you don’t cause any damage to your handset. The mod can be installed via recovery, all download links can be found at XDA.

XPeria Home_1When Sony updated the Xperia E1/E1 Dual to KitKat recently, it also adorned the handset with the latest Xperia Home launcher. We are currently running Xperia Home build number 6.2.1.A.0.12 on the Xperia Z2, however the Xperia E1 has been updated to version 6.3.A.0.7. There aren’t any big differences, but the new launcher has changed the icon when deleting an app/widget from a trash can to an “X” symbol instead.

Other changes include what appear to be slightly different fonts and performance optimisations. The new Xperia Home will only work on devices running at least Android 4.4 KitKat. The download APK can be found below and should work on both rooted and non-rooted handsets.
