More details on Recovery mode for select Xperia devices

Recovery_Phone_smallRecently, we brought word that Sony Mobile had started to officially support recovery mode within its bootloaders. Recovery mode can be very helpful for those wanting to flash custom ROMs and restoring back-up data. It also allows users to test new (and potentially unstable) kernels with the comfort of moving back to a stable kernel.

Recovery mode is already available for a number of devices through Sony’s version of Flash tool (unlocked bootloader is required). This includes the Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1 Compact, Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia E3, Xperia M2, Xperia T2 Ultra and Xperia T3. More device support is expected in due course.

For further details hit the source link below. It’s great to see Sony continuing its strong support on the developer scene. Karl-Johan Dahlström, Head of Developer Relations, had this to say: “Our overall goal with the open device program is to offer a development environment similar to the one for Nexus devices. Now, by making it much easier to debug, we hope this will further encourage innovation and kernel development on Xperia devices”.

FlashTool_XperiFirm integrationTwo of the most essential utilities for any Sony Xperia owner are Flashtool and XperiFirm. The combination of both of these tools allows any user to download, install and check firmware for any region and any variant of Sony Xperia device. The good news is that XperiFirm has now been integrated into the latest release of Flashtool.

Whilst the build number has not changed, the re-release of Flashtool version 0.9.18.5 includes an XperiFirm button that launches the program. It also means users now don’t have to manually delete the fwinfo.xml file that was causing errors when creating FTF firmware files. You can download the latest release over at the Flashtool website.

Xperia z3+ live wallpaper_1Many of you have been waiting for a port of the live wallpaper from the upcoming Xperia Z3+/Z4. Well it is now here, although as with most other ports you will need root access on your handset. The video below shows the new live wallpaper in action.

The flashable zip is provided below and you will need Superuser Mod for the first link. The second link does not need Superuser Mod (simply move to System/Apps with the correct permissions reboot). However, just to clarify, you need to be on Android Lollipop and root is required for both versions to install successfully (only install if you know what you are doing).

Update: There is a way to get this working on Android KitKat too, see here. [Thanks Sergio!]

Sony’s Concept for Android software leaks; download it now

Sony Concept for Android FirmwareWhilst we were not too surprised that screenshots of Sony’s Concept for Android software leaked yesterday, we are surprised that the actual firmware itself has leaked. This allows anyone with an Xperia Z3 (D6603) to try it out for themselves. The official trial is only available to 500 Sony Xperia Z3 users in Sweden.

However, if you don’t live in Sweden, or weren’t one of those selected, then you can download the firmware from the link below. Installing the firmware works the same as with any FTF firmware file using Androxyde’s Flashtool program. Be warned you will lose all of your data, but you can revert to stock Sony firmware be flashing an official Sony KitKat or Lollipop build.

Initial impressions for those that have tested it point to it being very similar to AOSP but with a few Sony applications baked in. The new software is fast and stable but doesn’t include some Sony features such as Stamina mode, Screen Recording and Xperia Themes.

Here’s a user comment from XDA member user91: “By the way, the ROM itself is absolutely nothing to excited about. Take any stock Sony Lollipop ROM, take away all the reasons for buying this phone (no double tap to wake, low brightness, no display enhancements, no sound enhancements) – well the camera works, and that’s it.

All of the installation information can be found in the links below. Do you plan to try it? Let us know in the comments below.

Flashtool update (0.9.19.0) adds support for 2015 Xperia models

$

screenshot1Flashtool developer Androxyde has pushed a latest version of the popular Sony Xperia utility moving it to build number 0.9.19.0. The latest release now supports the latest Sony Xperia devices such as the Xperia Z3+, Z4 Tablet and for the first time MediaTek-based devices are also supported such as the Xperia E4 and E4g series.

We would advise some caution before updating however. Flashtool now needs a template script for your particular handset before a FTF firmware file can be flashed. This can be generated by a program such as Simple USB Logger, but the procedure to capture this data is complex.

This particular Flashtool release only supports the following models: Xperia Z1, Z2, Z3, Z3+, Z4 Tablet, E4, E4g and M4. Androxyde will add a tutorial shortly on how to generate and add new FSC’s (Flashtool script) to increase compatibility. In the meantime, if you have a different device, stick to the older build (0.9.18.6).

Xperia Z4 Tablet mod expands recent apps with BKB50 keyboard

Xperia Z4 Tablet Recent Apps Keyboard_2The Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet has a neat feature when used with the companion BKB50 Bluetooth Keyboard, it shows a list of recent apps that looks similar to the Windows Start menu. However, what can be annoying is there is a picture of the keyboard that limits how many recent apps can be seen.

Step forward AndroPlus from XDA, who has created a mod that allows you to use the space occupied by the picture for more recent apps. The mod is only confirmed to work with the LTE version (SGP771), but it could work on the Wi-Fi version (SGP712). Your tablet will need to be rooted for the mod to work. The adb instructions can be found at the source link.

New Flashtool (0.9.19.1) brings compatibility to all Xperia devices

$

Flashtool_0.9.19.1Flashtool developer Androxyde has updated the must-have utility for Xperia owners to build number 0.9.19.1. The big feature in this latest version is that it supports all Xperia devices.

If you remember, the last Flashtool version (0.9.19.0) brought support for the 2015 Sony Xperia devices. However, the method to flash devices was slightly different with a FSC (Flashtool Script) needed. Therefore, if you were using an older Xperia model (2014 series and older) it was recommended to use the prior Flashtool release (0.9.18.6).

Flashtool 0.9.19.1 marries both prior versions together, so if no FSC is found, Flashtool will use the old method of flashing as seen in Flashtool 0.9.18.6.

Flashtool_0.9.19.1

The latest version of Flashtool can be downloaded here. A word of caution on the installation, Androxyde mistakenly placed a couple of folders in the wrong location. This means you may not be able to open Flashtool. To solve this, navigate to the following folder: “C:\Flashtool\x10flasher_lib\winjre” where you will find two folders inside (winjre32 and winjre64). Place these two folders one level higher i.e. at “C:\Flashtool\x10flasher_lib”. It should be placed as can be seen in the picture below.

Update: A new version of Flashtool (0.9.19.2) has been released that fixes the bug above.

Firefox OS available to download for select Xperia devices

Firefox OS releasedThe FXP (FreeXperia) team of developers have worked wonders with Sony Xperia devices for a number of years now. If you like tinkering with your devices and you’re bored with Android custom ROMs then you might want to try Firefox OS. The FXP team worked in collaboration with Mozilla to support several Sony Xperia devices in Mozilla’s repos.

Firefox OS is a fast and lightweight operating system that FXP says should work extremely efficiently on current hardware. FXP has released Firefox OS builds for the following devices: Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3 Compact, Xperia Z2, Xperia T2 Ultra and Xperia E3. Firefox OS Nightly’s for these devices can be downloaded here.

The good news is that even though FXP are releasing new builds, it is also enabling OTA updates on all devices. Therefore updates will be automatically pushed to you every week. It is worth noting that the current builds do not feature any Firefox OS branding as Mozilla has been quite precious over the use of its brand and logos in any AOSP ROM. Therefore, FXP is using the “Foxfooding” logo for now. If you want to find out more details, click the source link below.

Xperia Z5 Disassembly GuideThe folks over at iFixit have provided a handy teardown guide for the Sony Xperia Z5. To be clear, the guide is a member-contributed one, rather than from iFixit staff but it very clearly shows the step-by-step process involved in taking apart your Xperia Z5. If you have seen previous disassembly guides for the Xperia Z series, then you will know that removing the back cover involves heating the rear to soften the glue and using a suction cup to prise open the cover.

The teardown confirms the dual heat pipes used in the Xperia Z5. There is also an accompanying video that goes through screen replacement as well as how to fix the charging port and replace battery. Check the full guide at the source link below.

FirefoxOSBack in September, we reported that the FreeXperia team of developers were providing nightly releases of Firefox OS for select devices. Five devices were supported (Xperia Z3, Z3 Compact, Z2, T2 Ultra and Xperia E3), but now another two have been added to the list – the Xperia Z1 (Honami ) and Xperia Z1 Compact (Amami).

Firefox OS will appeal to those that perhaps want to try something new – as the operating system is fast and lightweight it should work very efficiently on current hardware. If you want to get started hit this link, where you can download the nightly releases.

Xperia Camera 2 ported_4Sony Mobile updated the camera UI for the Xperia Z5 series earlier today with the Camera 2.0.0 update. So far, the update is only live on the Xperia Z5, Z5 Compact and Z5 Premium, but the APK will also work on the Xperia Z3+ without modification.

However, if you own an earlier Xperia Z series model with 20.7MP camera, then you’ll be glad to hear that Camera 2.0.0 has been ported (as long as you have root). The Xperia Z5 camera port will work on the Xperia Z1, Z1 Compact, Z2, Z3, and Z3 Compact. To install, hit the source link to download the zip file and then flash through recovery. There are still some bugs being ironed out, but keep an eye on the source link for future updates.

Sony opens camera for Xperia AOSP

$

Sony Xperia AOSP CameraSony Mobile has made available an experimental AOSP (Android Open Source Project) camera for developers. The idea behind the move is to encourage development of custom ROMs with basic camera functionality. We say ‘basic’ because the open source camera does not include any of Sony’s enhancements, the camera is based on the Qualcomm framework and is not “designed for daily use.”

It is worth flagging that this developer-only camera framework has a number of limitations. For example, the camera is not calibrated therefore the picture quality is not to the same standard as what you are used to seeing with the Xperia camera software. Sony also cautions that “you will experience lags and crashes.”

The experimental AOSP camera framework is available for the following devices: Xperia Z1, Z1 Compact, Z Ultra, Z2, Z2 Tablet, Z3, Z3 Compact, Z3 Tablet Compact, Z4 and Z4 Tablet. Support for the Xperia Z5 series, E3, M2 and T3 will be added in due course. If you want to find out more hit the source link below.
